How Does Manipulation Under Anesthesia Work?

Manipulation under anesthesia uses a series of movements, stretches and postures to remove adhesions and scar tissue from bones and tissues in the body that could be triggering pain. Providers who use MUA therapy believe that loosening tight, fibrous tissue from the body's structures will alleviate pain.

Treatments are performed in an outpatient surgical setting by healthcare providers who are certified to perform MUA. For the best outcome, your care may be managed by a team of healthcare professionals.

What Type of Pain Control is Available for Manipulation Under Anesthesia?

Because movements of the spine can be very painful for the patient, experts in anesthesia and pain control will offer a variety of medication options. General anesthesia, local injections and conscious sedation with IV medications may all be a choice. Your provider will be able to tell you more.

Are You a Candidate for Manipulation Under Anesthesia?

MUA should be used for very specific back pain conditions. In addition to those mentioned above, others include:

  • Decreased spinal range of motion
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Nerve entrapment
  • Sciatica  and pseudo-sciatica
  • Failed back surgery
  • Chronic tension headaches
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • Traumatic torticollis

Patients who should not pursue manipulation under anesthesia include those with:

  • Cancer with metastasis to the bone
  • Fractures
  • Sudden onset arthritis
  • Sudden onset gout
  • Spinal osteoporosis
  • Uncontrolled diabetic neuropathy
  • Evidence of spinal cord compression

Care after Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Most patients will not have any pain after MUA. Muscle soreness similar to a strenuous workout is common, but patients usually notice an almost immediate change in their pain or range of motion. Your provider may also prescribe ultrasound, massage, hot packs, or electrical muscle stimulation therapies to help reduce the formation of new scar tissue.
